
Mr Barak Obama is a descendant of the Luo Community. His Mzee was from the Luo Community. The distance between Mr Obama and Mr Raila Odinga is very small. The first time they met they imagined each other brothers. They even made the assumption that they were brothers and greeted each other as Luo brothers would.
Mr Barack Obama was a man looking for the roots of his ancestors through his Mzee. A man trying to understand himself by understanding the paternal side of his family. He had grown up in the united states of America with the maternal side of his family.
Mr Obama came to Kenya for the first time with basic information from his relatives from the paternal side of his family. The relatives say they went to collect Mr Obama from the airport in a Volkswagen beetle. Another time Mr Obama came to visit they collected him from the airport and while they were traveling home the car broke down. This is a person who one day would become the President of the United States of America. Even though Mr Raila Odinga did not know Barak Obama, Mr Barak Obama knew Raila Odinga. Mr Raila Odinga was already active in Kenyan politics.
Mr Obama was impressed by Mr Raila Odinga. because of his determination and ability to organize an effective opposition against a sitting government that was perceived as corrupt and oppressive by the western world.
Mr Obama and Mr Raila Odinga had many things in common. Apart from being descendants of the same community, they both believe in the idea of democracy. Mr Barack Obama was and still is a member of the democratic party in the United States of America and Mr Raila Odinga is the undisputed leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Both also believe in the idea of constitutionalism. But most importantly Mr Barack Obama knew that Mr Raila Odinga had organized a coup de tat in 1982. A coup de tat that failed and Mr Odinga jailed. People died in the coup de tat and most likely he believed that the coup de tat was justified. But still Mr Obama had his reservations.
Mr Barack Obama’s political career began to blossom and he became a member of the senate in the united states of America. And then he was really noticed when he decided to run for the presidency of the United States of America in 2007. At this time Mr Barack Obama and Mr Raila Odinga were familiar with each other. In the year 2007 Mr Obama was running to be the president of the United States of America and Mr Raila Odinga was running to be the president of Kenya.
As Mr Barack Obama’s Political Career continued to shine, the relationship between Raila Odinga and Barack Obama also started to blossom. In the beginning, Mr Raila Odinga was looking for political mileage considering Mr Barack Obama was a very influential person in American politics. And still there was a probability that he was going to be even more influential. Mr Obama was hoping to be able to assists Kenyans and the Luo community especially.
The two had many meetings on how to coordinate their efforts. Mr Raila Odinga especially would invoke Mr Obama’s name in his political rallies, giving the audience the impression that theirs was a close relationship.
The two continued to learn about each other in their relationship. And as they learnt about each other, they began creating boundaries in the relationship. Mr Raila Odinga started learning that there limits to the political favors that he could receive from Mr Barack Obama. For example, there was not going to be any military assistance even if the incumbent rigged the election. And there was not going to be any financial assistance.
Mr Obama also understood some intimate details about Mr Raila Odinga. Especially of concern was the Luo community. Mr Obama who was interested in the Luo community knew that the women of the Luo community were oppressed. And the reason why they were oppressed was because of Luo community culture. When Mr Barack Obama learnt that Mr Raila Odinga was a strong believer of Luo community culture, he understood the reason for the poverty among the Luo people.
At while after his visit to Kenya, He was the seating president of the United states of America. Mr Obama advised the Kenyan people and the Kenyan political class. He said many things in his speech. But most importantly he said, “lets free our women. One is allowed to be creative”. And the assumption was that this statement was directed at Mr Raila Odinga.
